From Podcast Newbie to Podcast Manager in 2 years

Let’s take a quick look at how it all started.

January 2018

I found a book you may have heard of:  You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero. That one book was all it took for the wheels to start turning. I was hooked on the idea of entrepreneurship, universal energy, and finding my own path.

March 2018: The Broken Glass Blog

I launched The Broken Glass Blog in the spring of 2018 to support women in the music industry. I felt drawn to helping women in music find their voice after the release of the USC Annenberg Inclusion in the Recording Studio? report and the 2018 Grammy Awards (#Grammysomale).

The premise of the blog was to provide tips for women looking to start and manage their careers as well as highlighting badass women.

September 2018: The Broken Glass Podcast and the History in 10 Podcast

By the Summer of 2018, I was hooked on podcasts. I wanted to expand on the blog to tell women’s stories, and what better way than to have them tell their stories?

But I wanted to get some practice before I started a podcast that involved working with guests, so I decided to start a for-fun podcast.

I love history, and after the cancellation of NBC’s Timeless, I wanted to continue my history education. I launched the History in 10 Podcast to not only learn about history, but to get as much podcasting practice as possible.

I taught myself to record, edit, set up systems, and streamline my process through my for-fun podcast, so when I launched The Broken Glass Podcast and hosted guests, I was ready to go.

 

July 2019: Virtual Assistance

When I first started The Broken Glass Podcast, I thought it was my business. I quickly learned that my podcast, and many podcast, were a content marketing tool, not the business itself.

What did I want to offer? How could I still fulfill my mission of supporting women in the music industry?

I played around with varying services and products: courses, coaching, eBooks…you name it I mapped it out over a year.

Then I attended the She Did It Her Way Summit in Chicago and it hit me – I was so focused on what I thought people wanted that I didn’t focus on asking them what they actually wanted or where my own skills lay.

In late June, I took a two week break from work, the podcast, and the business to travel to Europe. 5 countries in 14 days meant lots of flights, trains, and bus rides to think. And during that downtime, I listed out my skills, the needs of the industry, the wants of my audience.

When I arrived home, it was clear – virtual assistance was the perfect fit.

In August 2019, I launched virtual assistance services and didn’t look back.

 

May 2020: Quit My Job and Pivoted to Podcast Management

Cue the pandemic year(s). My once solid full-time job became shaky. Being in the music industry is tough, but add a pandemic to the mix and it was clear things were not so rosy for our industry. My company closed our LA office and relocated to the head office in Colorado. I had the choice to go with them but knew my time in the southwest wasn’t up quite yet. I needed to be close to the industry and close to my family, so I made the decision to leave my job and pursue my own business.

I brought on a virtual assistance coach, someone I met along my entrepreneurial journey, and she helped me narrow my focus. Being a general VA is great, but if I wanted this to be my life and career, I needed to boost my services. We spent three months together, and she pointed me toward podcast management. “You have two podcasts,” she said, “Why not offer podcast management services?”

By June of that year, I launched my first ever premium podcast management services.

 

October 2021: Mind Your Pod

After another year of podcasting and working on client podcasts,  I decided it was time to develop my own podcast about podcasting. Sure, I had a blog and wrote articles on Medium, but why write about it when I can talk about it?

Mind Your Pod, the podcast about podcasting, launched in October 2021. The podcast focuses on developing and producing a podcast with content marketing strategy in mind and provides practical tips, tricks, and resources for any type of podcaster.

Company Vision

Mind Your Pod exists to help entrepreneurs, coaches, and other new podcasters develop a podcast that integrates seamlessly into their content marketing strategy. 

I want to help others experience the joy of connecting with their audience authentically through a new medium that engages and lets them get their message out to the world.
